Pinochet did not Require Heart By-pass Surgery


Military Hospital Dr. Juan Ignacio Vergara faces the press

Late in the evening Military Hospital Dr. Juan Ignacio Vergara, said Pinochet did not require by-pass surgery. Dr. Vergara said an examination of the angioplasty procedure determined Pinochet did not required heart by-pass surgery. He said cardiologists found the angioplasty performed early in the morning worked and that fluids build-up in the lungs began to subside.

Dr. Vergara said Pinochet remains critical under sedation, cautioned that the next 24 to 48 hours are critical. He said a new hospital report will be issued 10 AM (13:00 GMT) Monday Morning.

A relieved family slowly began to return home, while hardcore supporters remain holding a vigil outside the military hospital.
